What Do You Focus On?

Posted on February 13, 2007 - Filed Under General |

I’ve been noticing that my patient counts were down last week.   About two weeks ago I was sick.  The week before that I was engaged.  During those weeks, I was actually very busy.  However, right before that I had been spending a great deal of time thinking about and working with Building Your Idea Private Practice.   When I became engaged, suddenly preliminary wedding plans came into focus.  When I was sick, I was focused on nothing other than sleeping and then getting well.

A few weeks later, I see the results on not focusing on my business much at all.   I have begun working on my marketing ideas and thinking more about what I want to create in my new business. I hope that over the next few weeks, I’ll end up seeing a few more calls.    I had one today and that’s always a good sign.

We can’t always focus on our work.  In fact, to do so would be unhealthy.   One of the challenges of being your own boss is being able to manage those downtimes when there aren’t as many patients coming in.   In my old office, my officemate and I used to play the game of what else are we supposed to do when things were slower.  Did we need a long lunch to run an errand?  Did she need a nap? Wasn’t it great that the person who cancelled was the last person so we could go out and have a nice dinner with a friend and not rush?

If things remained slow, we’d start wondering what else we’d been focusing on and perhaps work on changing what we were thinking about.  It was wonderful to work with someone who had such equanimity about the ups and downs of a private practice.  Slow times are something that just happen.  Sometimes they happen because we aren’t focused on what we need to focus on, but sometimes they do happen because we need a break and the universe is giving us one.
What have you been focusing on?  Is your practice reflecting this?

Having a website is really important to marketing your practice. I work for a website company which offers an automatic keep in touch e-mail system with clients which could be helpful for when you don’t have time. Let me know if you have any questions about our services or websites in general.

Thank you for your interest Beth. However, my host is pretty good about helping me set up anything I need. As I’m engaged to a programmer, most of that sort of thing is pretty easy for me to do on my own.
