Five Reasons to Pick Your Niche

Posted on November 17, 2006 - Filed Under General |

Do you worry that if you decide to specialize, you’ll lose patients? Pick your niche carefully and you might just create business. Remember if someone outside your “specialty” area comes to your office, this doesn’t mean you’ll turn them away. Current patients who come to you for your specialty may ask if you’ll also see a friend who has a different problem.

Why pick a niche?

Reason #1
Other practitioners will refer their problem patients to you. If I have a person with back pain that just won’t go away and someone across town specializes in back pain, I’m much more likely to refer out to this person for the good of my patient. Also this will give you clout with other types of healthcare providers who see a patient with that particular problem
Reason #2

As you market yourself, you become known as someone with special knowledge that not everyone has. Why do I go to a cat vet and not just a vet? I want my cats to see someone who understands them. Your patients will think the same.

Reason #3

You learn more about your specialty and actually become a better provider for that problem. It’s easier to focus your continuing education and reading around a specific area of your practice and you’ll gain more knowledge. It’s difficult to keep up on the whole realm of acupuncture healing.

Reason #4

As you become known in your field, you may start writing articles. This creates the sense of being an expert in your field. Your name will be known outside your local area and this will attract even more patients.

Reason #5

You start working with the patients you really want to help. Your enthusiasm for talking about your profession will attract other people. You’ll also be happier and more satisfied with how your practice is growing.
