Diversify Your Practice

You may wonder how to diversify if you are an acupuncturist.  However, as a private practitioner, there are ways to diversify what you do. Do you mostly see patients one at a time? Then perhaps you offer a few group sessions. You can get ideas for this over at Working Class Acupuncture.  You don’t have to just offer community acupuncture, but perhaps a few hours can diversify your practice.
I’m working on an idea where I would set up this type of situation only for existing clients. I’d probably require that patients see me for an initial visit and perhaps a six other visits and then once they are more on a maintanence schedule, offer to allow them the group sesssions. This is a new idea for me and I’m still working on it. The groups would be much lower cost than the single sessions (though I try and keep my prices down so people can afford it).  I worked in community settings with acupuncture and found the results were not as good as I would have liked. However, I feel that knowing my patients and having them on a maintenance schedule would allow me to offer them a lower cost alternative to maintain the gains they received from their original treatments.
Another way to diversify is to teach classes.  Maybe you know tai chi or qi gong or yoga. Do you meditate? You can teach classes on these subjects. You may need another venue but if you find something like this, this gives you another stream of income.  Additionally these types of classes are a great way for potential referrals to your acupuncture practice as well.
I love to write and love working online.  As I go about working on this, I am working on thinking of ways of bringing what I know about acupuncture and health to the online community and creating a bit of extra income.
If you think about what you really want to create in your life, you might find that you have many ways of generating income through your acupuncture practice. It’s not always just about seeing one patient an hour.

I noticed that no one has posted any comments, so I wanted you to know that there is someone out here checking in on you regularly. I have you bookmarked, and what you are writing about is particularly relevant to me at this time in my practice. After nine years of practice in one location, I am preparing to start practicing in a new state, and have been thinking about all the things you are talking about. I love the links to other sites rich with resources and information. Thank you, thank you, thank you! What a help. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Marion. I’m glad this could help. As I was looking around at finding ways of marketing my acupuncture practice, there is so little out there that’s specific to what I do. I keep searching online for different places and have other blogs and sites book marked that I hope will help others. I also have friends who blog on internet marketing and keep an eye on who they feature. Sometimes those ideas are useful as well.
Bonnie,
I discovered your site a while back and have been meaning to post a comment. Then I noticed that you have posted about my site and said some nice things…thank you!
I agree with Marion, you are doing great work–keep it up!
